report by Trevor Connell
Doltone House Darling Island Wharf proved to be an excellent venue for the 2014 Australian Event Awards.
The room looked stunning, the food was great and the guests mostly well behaved.
The awards presentations ran smoothly with most winners keeping their acceptance speeches within the allocated time. While the Royal Australian Navy International Fleet Review picked up a swag of awards it was the team behind the Major League Baseball Opening Series that were the most excited on the night – especially when they won Event of the Year.
The entertainment proved to be… well interesting… the opening act was a group of six guys who mix their own soundtrack then move to it with great choreography, very tight. Swagamama would be a great act to liven up pretty much any corporate event.
Anthony Laye is billed as a celebrity mind reader. Anyone who has watched Fool Us with Penn and Teller would understand that what he actually does is to manipulate an audience member into saying and doing what he subliminally suggests – however it is a very entertaining act that involves nail guns; so not the sort of act to book for a tradies gig (might just give them the wrong idea).
Ciaren Gribben comes from Northern Ireland; he has a great voice and has worked with an impressive list of performers around the world. For his first set Ciaren accompanied himself on guitar and was supported by a fiddler. Great Irish set. To close the night Ciaren blasted the room with his full band. A rock band with the volume to suit the Hordern Pavilion – not a dinner.
I’m afraid the less said about the MC the better, Sam McCool might be OK at a festival but he was totally out of his depth (and our comfort zone) doing corporate.
