Broadband Solutions, one of Australia’s most successful business internet service providers has released a report that charts the current landscape of internet usage and Wi-Fi deployment in the Australian hospitality industry.
Broadband Solutions analysed the bandwidth of over 600 Australian hotels throughout 2013 and 2014, identifying the average bandwidth of hotels and analysing different trends in internet use.
“We are excited to release our Hospitality Trends: Internet Usage and Wi-Fi Deployment report as it provides excellent analyses of the current challenges and opportunities for the hospitality industry,” says Founder and Managing Director of Broadband Solutions, Sam Bashiry.
The Hospitality Trends: Internet Usage and Wi-Fi Deployment report reviews the impact of changing societal habits including the rising popularity of online gaming, video streaming, social media, app downloads and software updates on consumer expectations of hotel Wi-Fi. The days of Wi-Fi only being available in hotel lobbies are long gone with consumers now expecting coverage throughout the hotel.
“What started off as a majority of hotels having ADSL2+ has now transformed into “must have” high speed bandwidth for every hotel from 2 star to 6 star, reflecting the recent exponential growth in technology. Hotels are therefore in a position where what was once a feature offered typically to business users is now expected from the majority of hotel patrons,” added Mr Bashiry.
The report acknowledges that today’s hotel guest arrives with an average of 3 devices usually laptops, mobiles and tablets with many of these not 3 or 4G enabled and only using data when connected to Wi-Fi. With more guests expecting complimentary Wi-Fi, hotels have had to cater for an increase in usage and simultaneously a decrease in revenue.
Broadband Solutions provides the average bandwidth for 5 star, 4-5 star and 3-4 star hotels however acknowledges that whilst analysing the Wi-Fi usage it became evident that bandwidth requirements are also heavily reflective of guest demographic and conference facilities.
The Hospitality Trends: Internet Usage and Wi-Fi Deployment report recognises The Marriott as the highest ranking hotel group for bandwidth capacity and confirmed that more than half of Broadband Solutions’ hotel customer database plan to increase their bandwidth annually.
