A major research project will be the cornerstone of the Business Events Council of Australia’s policy development through 2014/15.
Following the BECA Board Meeting at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre last week, Chairman Matthew Hingerty said the Board was pleased with the study’s progress, and appealed to the industry to support it by responding to the researchers’ request for data. The research, being conducted by EY, is co-funded by the Federal Government’s TQUAL program.
“We are very excited by this project, which will give us the foundation for our conversation with the Federal and State Governments, our members and investors,” Mr Hingerty said.
“The research will comprehensively define the industry and measure its impact across the Australian economy for the first time since the 2005 National Business and Events Study.
“Too often business events are statistically lumped with major events (sports, shows and cultural events) or leisure tourism.” Mr Hingerty said. “This sells us short as business events have the valued-add of not only the visitation activities but the products and services bought and sold, contracts written and business contacts made.
“Indeed 2014/15 promises to be an outstanding year for the business events sector, with the many G20 meetings, the development of the Korean and Japanese Free Trade Agreements, the progress around the redevelopment of the Sydney convention and exhibition facilities and a number of high-profile health related conferences.
Mr Hingerty appealed to the industry to support the BECA study, despite the time and effort involved.
“We understand that there are a number of data sets to which the industry is asked to contribute. However this is about our future and I would ask that everyone gets behind it.”
Mr Hingerty said that other topics discussed at the BECA Board meeting included:
- BECA’s input into the 2020 tourism targets now being driven by Austrade
- Business and Visitor facilitation issues
- Broader industry relations – BECA resolved to join the National Tourism Alliance Roundtable
- The Business Events sector’s role in the G20 events.
Mr Hingerty said the Board had resolved to regularly communicate to the sector after its meetings.
