Sydney Entertainment Centre General Manager Steve Romer has been awarded one of the event industry’s highest honours, having been named Australia’s Venue Management Professional of the Year by the Venue Management Association.
Mr Romer was presented with the 2012 award at the VMA’s annual congress gala dinner at the RACV Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast last week, recognising a career in venue management spanning almost three decades.
The award was presented by the association’s President Brian Morris who paid tribute to Mr Romer’s role both at the Sydney Entertainment Centre and within the VMA.
“This is a well-deserved recognition of the hard work that Steve has put into developing the Venue Management Association as a Councillor and as President, as well as the impact he has had on the industry over the years,” Mr Morris said.
Mr Romer is a long-term member of the VMA and served as President from 2008 to 2011, as well as serving as a board director of the International Association of Venue Managers.
He has been General Manager of the Sydney Entertainment Centre for the past three years, taking responsibility for the planning and delivery of the venue’s live music concerts, sports events, family shows and other live events. Previously he was Director of Operations at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Both the Sydney Entertainment Centre and Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre are managed by Darling Harbour Convention and Exhibition Pty Ltd, whose Chief Executive Ton van Amerongen said Mr Romer had made a big impact on Australia’s events industry.
“Steve has not only managed one of Australia’s biggest venues with expert precision, he has also been a committed advocate for the entire venue industry,” Mr van Amerongen said. “I’m sure his industry colleagues around the country are as grateful for his contribution as we are.”
