The City will provide a $10,000 sponsorship for a conference exploring sustainability,climate change and tourism in protected areas.
The Global Eco Asia-Pacific Tourism Conference attracts industry leaders from around the region. It is the annual conference of Ecotourism Australia, a leader on ecotourism and sustainability.
Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said holding the event in Sydney would build our reputation as an environmental leader.
“Today’s holiday and business tourists are increasingly looking for destinations which not only provide a great holiday but are also environmentally responsible.
“We are pleased to welcome such a significant international ecotourism conference to our doorstep, which will highlight not only the business side of ecotourism but enable us to showcase Sydney’s our unique natural heritage”.
This year’s conference will be held in November at a range of venues across Sydney. Exact dates and venues will be announced next month.
The City of Sydney has set the most ambitious reduction target for carbon emissions of any government in Australia and the Asian region, at 70 per cent from 2006 levels by 2030.
It will achieve this goal, which covers the city centre and the surrounding local government area, with the installation of a network of trigeneration energy systems, renewable energy and energy efficiency measures.
The City also plans to reduce water use by 25 per cent by 2030 and waste going to landfill by 66 per cent.
