ISES Sydney chapter has followed in the successful footsteps of the Melbourne chapter and staged their first Conference for Emerging Event Professionals with the theme Colour Outside the Lines.
In keeping with the theme the conference was held not in a meeting venue but in a nightclub! The Marquee at The Star. The event was attended by around 180 students from various tertiary colleges around Sydney – and the Blue Mountains.
Nigel Collin spoke on behalf of the ISES team in a communication to the attendees “This was a great event and we are so happy to have provided you with the chance to learn, listen and be inspired by some of the event industry’s top professionals”.

Excitement started to build on arrival as everyone was given the chance to test-drive one of the newest innovations in event photography – the ultimate selfie! We hope you all enjoyed getting to play with this and were able to get some happy snaps of you and your friends.
MC for the day, Nigel Collin, kicked the day off with an exciting recap of the 2013 ISES Live event in the Bahamas. This congregation of international ISES members is a real experience! Nigel helped us explore the production of this event and showcasing how ISES can be accessed on a global scale.
David Merrell was bought to us via Skype; this highly regarded international event expert was able to showcase the importance of design throughout events, not to mention a few name drops. Oh the glamour of Hollywood!
Darryl Lovegrove shared his incredible story of how he found himself in one of the largest surprise entertainment acts in the world, at times communicating with us through OPERATIC SINGING?! Bet you didn’t expect that one!
Now with the morning under your belt we decided to mix it up a bit and divide you all up into groups. Hopefully you took this chance to meet some new people, and expand your networks.
Lena Malouf’s presentation was all about becoming career ready by protecting and showcasing our best assets. Full speed ahead we go as the next generation of budding event professionals!
Damian Damjanovski put us under the pump with Speed Pitching. Creating and delivering multiple event pitches in less than half an hour was a challenge, but we’re not surprised to see some amazing ideas come out of it.
The third workshop, hosted by the amazing guys at BeChallenged was all about team building! Congrats to all of those who managed to “Crack the Cube”, even under a little bit of drizzle from the skies!
Diedre Brannick introduced us to the ever-changing platform of technology and how we, as emerging professionals, can use it best in our events.
Scott Bellingham, current ISES Sydney Chapter President entertained us with countless memes and great advice on how to manage ourselves as professionals in the industry. SUIT UP!
The Epic Fail Panel guided us through some of their most unfortunate (and hilarious) experiences. Epic Fails can, and do, happen to the best of us but they also prove to be learning curves and hopefully very funny stories in hindsight!
