A prestigious international convention industry award designed to showcase and recognise innovations and creative thinking has selected Darwin Convention Centre as a finalist in this year’s competition.
The Centre’s entry, a strategic familiarisation program held annually, got the nod of the AIPC as one of the industry’s most progressive initiatives and a contender for its 2011 Innovation Award. The AIPC is an international association of convention and exhibition centres whose mission is to support, encourage and recognise excellence in convention centre operation and management.
Dubbed “Meet Darwin – A Journey of Discovery”, the Darwin Convention Centre project is aimed at enhancing Darwin’s market position as a business event destination. It differs from traditional familiarisation programs in that it has a structured three-day program with a strong educational component.
Launched in 2008, the initiative has so far resulted in changed perceptions of Darwin as a business destination which led to 17 confirmed events that will bring nearly 9,000 delegates to the Northern Territory’s tropical harbour capital.
The honour marks the second time Darwin Convention Centre has received the distinguished AIPC nomination, winning the Members’ Choice Award in 2009.
Winners of the 2011 AIPC Innovation Award will be announced in a gala function to be held in conjunction with the 2011 AIPC Annual Conference in San Diego, USA from June 28 to July 1.
