The Adelaide Convention Bureau was named winner in the “Best Tourism Marketing” category for its annual Destination SA famil and tradeshow event at the South Australia Tourism Awards ceremony held in Adelaide on Friday 23rd November.
This third consecutive win (2010 award was for the Bureau’s re-brand campaign and 2011 award for Conventions Adelaide Program) automatically puts the Bureau into the SA Tourism Industry Council’s Hall of Fame.
Destination SA, in this its 9th year, brings some 50 convention and incentive buyers and media from interstate, NZ and SE Asia to Adelaide in July each year to experience some of the best experiences and locations in South Australia as well as network and form relationships with local businesses and organisations with an interest in this lucrative tourism genre.
During their time in Adelaide, Destination SA delegates are invited to participate in an expo whereby they are provided a full day itinerary of carefully matched one on one meetings with local businesses and organisations with an interest in Business Events with a view to conducting future business together. A series of social networking events held during the 4 day program take in some of the more iconic venues in South Australia with cocktail parties and or dinners being held in recent years at The Adelaide Oval, Adelaide Town Hall, Mortlock Library and Queens Theatre.
A highlight for those visiting during Destination SA however is the famils – whether they be an up close and personal tour of the Adelaide Central Market or lunch at the National Wine Centre in Adelaide, to hot air ballooning and Harley riding through the Barossa to tasting vintage port from the year of their birth, through to experiencing the magic of Kangaroo Island on a quad bike or enjoying a cruise through the Hills in vintage cars to partake in a cooking and wine blending experience at Chapel Hill winery. The famils are designed to showcase the best of regional SA and the City with a view to encouraging incentive travel programmes coming to our state and pre and post touring of convention delegates or accompanying partners.
Adelaide Convention Bureau CEO Damien Kitto said “this third straight win for the Bureau is exceptional and I applaud our team who work tirelessly on events such as Destination SA. It is a pleasure to showcase our magnificent State to these interstate and international visitors and we never tire of hearing the hosted buyer accolades afterwards for South Australia and for Destination SA itself.”
Destination SA, since its inception 9 years ago now delivers around $30 million of business each year into South Australia and continues to be the biggest local event on the Adelaide Convention Bureau’s calendar. With a small annual budget Destination SA certainly offers a massive 300:1 return on investment for Bureau members and ultimately South Australia’s economy.
