Starwood Hotels & Resorts is pleased to announce the appointment of Hal Philp to the position of General Manager for Sheraton Melbourne Hotel, ahead of the property’s slated opening in March 2014.
In his role as General Manager, Hal will be responsible for the successful opening and overall operation of the new hotel, providing strategic and inspirational leadership to his team and delivering the distinguished Sheraton experience to hotel guests and clients.
Hal brings to the position a wealth of international hospitality experience and knowledge having worked with Starwood Hotels & Resorts for 19 years.
Prior to commencing his new role at Sheraton Melbourne Hotel, Hal sat on the senior leadership team at The St. Regis Doha as Deputy General Manager and played a pivotal role in the hotel’s opening in early 2012 and its effective operations beyond.

“This hotel opening is extremely significant, marking the return of the Sheraton brand to Melbourne after nine year’s absence and as the first five star hotel opening in the city for six years. This is an exciting next challenge for me after opening The St. Regis Doha and I look forward to working with the wider Sheraton Melbourne Hotel team to deliver the excellence and experiences our guests expect from the Sheraton brand.”
Originally from Queensland, Hal began his hospitality career in Food and Beverage at Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas Resort. He then continued and furthered his career working for Starwood Hotels & Resorts eventually taking on senior roles at the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa, Edinburgh and the former Sheraton Auckland, before returning home to his native Australia to fulfil the position of Executive Assistant Manager at Sheraton on the Park, Sydney, which he held for a number of years.
Following a successful term at Sheraton on the Park Sydney, and before moving to the Middle East to work in the pre-opening team for The St. Regis Doha, Hal moved to Shanghai as the Hotel Manager for The St. Regis Shanghai.
Hal’s impressive resume is testament to his leadership skills, and extensive knowledge and experience executing luxury service levels and experiences, which will play an important role in the opening and continuing operations of the Sheraton Melbourne Hotel.
