Townsville has been confirmed as the host city for the 2016 Perinatal Society for Australia and New Zealand (PSANZ) Congress.
This is a significant success for the local convention and events industry with the conference expected to have an economic impact of over $2 million for the Townsville Region.
Townsville Enterprise CEO David Kippin said the conference win is a testament to our growing strength in this market and confirms the potential of the local industry.
“This is positive news for the wider Townsville Region and for the Townsville Enterprise Convention Bureau. The conference will not only provide significant economic impact to the Region but it also opens up opportunities for other large scale conferences and pre and post touring, boosting our leisure market,” David said.
Townsville Enterprise General Manager Tourism & Events, Patricia O’Callaghan, said the bid win is a great reward for the Bureau and reminds businesses to consider the Townsville Region for their next conference or event.
“The Townsville Enterprise Convention Bureau is dedicated to bringing conferences like PSANZ to the Townsville Region. We will be holding another familiarisation tour in May to showcase the Region and hopefully confirm more bids like this one,” Patricia said.
Townsville Enterprise Convention Bureau worked closely with representatives from Townsville General Hospital and James Cook University to promote the Townsville Region as the ideal destination to host this event.
Townsville General Hospital’s Dr Koh said he was excited Townsville had been chosen for this international congress in 2016.
“I am delighted with the opportunity to profile the work of our neonatal intensive care unit and special care nursery in caring for around 900 pre-term and critically ill babies from across north and north-west Queensland every year,” Dr Koh said.
“Our unit is the largest in northern Australia and with links to James Cook University’s Medical School, Townsville is the ideal destination to host this event.”
The PSANZ National Conference is a five day conference event and is expected to attract between 900 and 1,000 international and national delegates.
