Captain Cook Cruises achieved a personal best during the Olympic games period in Sydney, carrying in excess of 50,000 passengers over the 17 days with more than 20 different cruise products and departures operated during the period.
We were very proud to be providing visitors and local Sydneysiders the opportunity to experience Sydney Harbour during the Olympics, said Allison Haworth, Director of Sales and Marketing of Captain Cook Cruises.
The Harbour Highlights cruise proved the most popular showcasing Sydney and the harbour, with each of the 10 daily departures leaving No.6 Jetty Circular Quay. Especially popular was the 8pm departure of this cruise, giving sightseers the opportunity to experience spectacular Sydney Harbour by night, including cruising under the Harbour Bridge in the glow of the Olympic rings.
The International Buffet Lunch and Top Deck Lunch cruises on Sydney 2000 also proved extremely popular, providing a harbour sightseeing experience and fresh Australian cuisine, said Allison.
The John Cadman Dinner Cruise and the Opera Afloat Dinner Cruise were particularly popular with international and domestic visitors who enjoyed the combination of a cruise on the harbour accompanied by an excellent dinner, dancing and fine Australian wines.
Special charter functions were held on board Captain Cook Cruises fleet for sponsors including Holden, British Airways, Coca-Cola, Telstra, BHP, UPS, AMP, Samsung, Panasonic, plus various dignitaries from countries such as Saudi Arabia and Malaysia. Captain Cook Cruises were also happy to host a sole charter of the exclusive MV Sydney 2000 for the American Basketball Dream Team with Bill Gates as a guest and many National Olympic Committees, including Denmark, Estonia, Netherlands, Angola, and Sweden.
In addition, Captain Cook Cruises hosted close to 200 International media visiting Australia during the Olympic games focussing on tourism, food and beverage with film crews utilising their vessels to gain the best footage of the harbour.
Captain Cook Cruises MV Reef Endeavour relocated to Sydney from Cairns on charter as a hotel ship to an American Insurance company, berthing at Pier One. The Norwegian Olympic Committee also chartered Captain Cook Cruises Explorer as a hotel ship for the games period.
Special Culinary Cruises were also organised for key food and beverage media to showcase Captain Cook Cruises, Tyrrells wines and Dairy Farmers cheeses highlighting New South Wales food and wine and Sydney Harbour.
Exposure like this comes along once in a lifetime, for Sydney, Australia and Captain Cook Cruises, said Allison.
One of our many successes during the Olympic games was on the night of the Closing Ceremony where we had eight of our vessels on the harbour hosting passengers from Australia and abroad. We carried in excess of 1300 passengers on this night alone. We ensured television access on board some of our vessels for passengers to enjoy the Closing Ceremony at Homebush, while guaranteeing front row seats in the harbour for the view of the fireworks spectacular, she concluded.
