Geissler Communications help to promote “Green Olympics”

Marie Geissler reports on her company’s Olympic involvement

During the Olympics Geissler Communications staged two media conferences at the Main Press Centre. These were undertaken in conjunction with the Environment Office. Our brief was to promote the Olympics "green" agenda in relation to architecture and design of the 2000 Olympics facilities with a focus to the Chinese media.

Spokespersons included Peter Ottesen, SOCOG Program Manager for the Environment Office, Bob Perry Director of Scott Carver Architects (architect for many of the Games facilities and much of the temporary overlay), and BHP's Manager of Olympic Projects Alan Gibbs.

The success of this initiative was the turnout and the terrific response we had from those attending. We managed to attract many of the major Chinese Media Agencies including some 19 members of the Chinese IOC. We had a translator for Mandarin and Cantonese. We felt we were able to demonstrate very convincingly the "cleverness and innovation" of the Australian initiatives.

Peter Ottesen gave a very concise overview of the major ideas that underpinned the "green" agenda; Bob Perry supported this by giving a slide presentation showing shots of the facilities before and during the Games. He explained how many facilities and been designed to be recycled so as to maximise cost effectiveness. Alan Gibbs gave an overview of the BHP contribution to materials used mentioning in particular many "green" aspects of the design of the Olympic Cauldron.

This is a great news story about on-selling to an international audience, Australian design culture and business and their collective commitment to "green" design.

Geissler Communications organsied for the media conferences be held in one of the media conference rooms at the MPC.
