Fourth Consecutive World Travel Award for Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre

9th November 2009

The Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre has won its fourth consecutive World Travel Award at a gala event in London , again claiming the title of Australasia ’s Leading Conference Centre.

The accolade was announced on Saturday night in front of hundreds of travel industry leaders who gathered to acknowledge excellence from across Asia, Australasia and the Indian Ocean

Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre Chief Executive Ton van Amerongen said the World Travel Award reflected a consistent commitment to quality.

“We’re honoured to receive this award in our 21st anniversary year and especially proud to have been recognised four times in a row,” Mr van Amerongen said.  “We have an enviable location in a spectacular city, but it’s the experience, professionalism and creativity of our team that makes the difference and we like to think this award provides an endorsement of that.”

The Centre was chosen from among six finalists in a vote by travel professionals from around the world.   Other finalists included facilities in Auckland , Cairns , Melbourne and Wellington .

Held on the eve of the annual World Travel Market in London , this year’s World Travel Awards have involved more than 183,000 votes and a total of 3600 nominees from all sectors of the travel industry.

Mr van Amerongen said the Centre’s latest World Travel Award joined other recent endorsements including its Green Globe Silver Certification, an achievement that recognises environmental leadership in the business events sector.  Earlier this year the Centre won three major accolades in the Meeting Events Australia (MEA) Awards for NSW.

The Centre remains Australia ’s busiest meetings venue, this year hosting an array of prestigious international events including the World Congress of Pathology in March and the World Federation of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology in August.
