Moomba’s back for 2010, with a new look and new direction!

MELBOURNE 19 JANUARY 2010

Moomba is Melbourne . The city’s best-loved and largest outdoor community festival has been lighting up the hearts and faces of Melburnians for more than 50 years and makes a vibrant return to the heart of the city in March. For more than half a century, Moomba has brought together generations of Melbournians to join in and celebrate the city’s colourful, energetic life. Moomba’s outstanding program of free activities along the city’s parks, streets and Yarra River continues to draw over 700,000 people to the event.

This year, the Moomba brand will be reinvented to bring it up to date with the modern era while still capturing and encapsulating the spirit, excitement and magic that epitomizes the great history of the festival. In support of Melbourne ’s community, the 2010 festival will partner with two great causes, raising the profile and supporting the two official Moomba charities ‘Save the Children’ and ‘Kids Under Cover’.

Moomba 2010 will also be bringing Melburnians a new extended program filled with over three days of outstanding, free entertainment. The ‘Cultural Quarter’ on Peppercorn lawn is one of Moomba’s latest additions, and will showcase unique and contemporary performances celebrating Melbourne ’s multicultural vibrancy.

Riverside Park will deliver bigger and better adrenalin-pumping world class skaters and BMX riders performing tricks and high-powered moves. Popular favourites including the hilarious and often wacky Birdman Rally, the spectacular Moomba Fireshows, and the crowd-pleasing Moomba Masters will also make a return, as well as the ever-popular and reinvigorated Moomba Parade. In 2010, the Parade is bigger and better than ever as Moomba celebrates Melbourne ’s great character and community spirit – ‘Moomba is Melbourne ’. Melburnians will see some well-known faces, themed floats to take their breath away and an exciting array of community and professional performers. Moomba 2010 will also feature a huge list of performers, musicians, dancers, singers, story-tellers, musicians, active games and activities, as well as more spaces for visitors to sit, relax and enjoy the ambience of this great Melbourne festival.

“We are excited to celebrate Moomba’s 55th birthday in 2010 with a new image, new direction and new feel,” Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said. “This invigoration will strengthen Moomba’s presence in the hearts and minds of Melburnians, and keep the festival going strong in the coming years.
