Victorian businesses win big at Winter Olympics

Tuesday 9 March 2010

Victorian companies scooped up more than $5.3 million in events contracts at the Vancouver Winter Olympics ensuring Victoria remains the sporting capital of the world both at home and abroad.

Industry and Trade Minister Jacinta Allan said the Australian International Sporting Events Secretariat (AISES) developed by the Victorian, Queensland and New South Wales governments had linked key Victorian sporting event businesses to opportunities in the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Ms Allan said cleaning company Cleanevent had secured a waste management contract at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver and was charged with the task of keeping pristine Canadian mountains clean and tidy.

“Cleanevent had a team of 300 people based at Whistler to ensure the mountain – an unusual place for large scale waste management - was kept clean and tidy for the duration of the Olympics,” she said.

Meanwhile, Ms Allan said Victorian catering company David Payne and Associates had secured the contract to cater at all Whistler Mountain Olympic venues.

“The company planned for the two-week Olympic job for three years to ensure everyone enjoyed great food at the Games’ most recognisable mountain,” she said.

Ms Allan said the Victorian Government’s commitment to AISES meant local businesses had access to global opportunities.

“As a result of strong government support to connect these businesses to opportunities in Vancouver they were real winners at the Games, raking in $5.3 million in additional business,” she said.

“Through AISES, Victorian businesses have a chance to export their services, resulting in more jobs and a stronger economy through the enhanced reputation Victorian companies will have via their association with a world class event.

“This of course means Victorian businesses can stay competitive and employ more Victorians back home at their bases of operation as these world-class companies secure large contracts at similarly world-class events.

“I believe they are now targeting markets for the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games, Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games, and also looking ahead to the London 2012 Olympic Games, Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games and Rio 2016 Olympic Games” she said.
