Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) were named first runners up of the 2014 INCON Digital Infrastructure Award out of 20 convention centres around the world, announced during IMEX in Frankfurt.
MCEC competed against an outstanding group of entries including German congress centre Darmstadtium in Hamburg which took out number one spot and Amsterdam RAI Exhibition and Convention Centre as second runners up.
MCEC’s Director of Technology Operations Michael Walsh said the INCON award put the venue’s leading digital capabilities in the spotlight and the role these play in enhancing the overall delegate experience.
“Coming second place to Darmstadtium is a huge achievement and a real credit to our in-house team who keep abreast of emerging technologies and work closely with customers to bring their events to life.
“MCEC was the first convention centre in Australia to offer free Wi-Fi and our wireless network has proven to be one of the most reliable in the industry, supporting thousands of concurrent users throughout the venue on a daily basis.
“It is onwards and upwards from here as we continue to invest significantly in our digital infrastructure, especially over the next two years, to ensure our customers have access to the best data, voice and audio visual technology at MCEC,” he said.
MCEC’s innovative use of digital infrastructure includes its digital signage system incorporating meeting room door cards, LED wayfinding walls and social media display capabilities.
Another service which leverages off the venue’s world leading infrastructure is Live View, which enables multiple video streams of event rooms to be viewed on a single screen. The first of its kind in Australia to be delivered via iPad or mobile devices, customers can click on any of the camera feeds for a full screen view of the room with audio.
More recently, and in another convention centre first, MCEC launched its new Visualisation Studio where the technology team work with customers to create a virtual 3D representation of their event space including audio, video and lighting.
INCON is a partnership of the world’s leading conference organisers and event management companies.
MCEC was awarded for “its recognition of the quality and efficiency of the convention centre’s digital infrastructure, its applications and tools, and the in which it is operated and maintained, resulting in an enhanced delegate experience and improved productivity.”
