The 2014 MEA National Conference wrapped up in Kuala Lumpur on May 17th and has been regarded as success for all involved.
This year was the first time the conference was held overseas since 2000 and many delegates agreed that the warm hospitality of the Malaysian hosts added to the overall atmosphere of the event. The conference was held over three days at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre and provided many opportunities for delegates to explore the city.
MEA2014 began with some excellent actives such as city tours, an “Essentials in Meeting Management” course specifically for MEA’sAsian delegates while MEA’s younger attendees spent the day at Y MEA with business coach, Peter Bliss, learning how to excel in the industry. Delegates also attended a “Welcome to Malaysia” session which helped them understand how to conduct business in Malaysia. The welcome reception was held at Saloma theatre restaurant where delegates watched a fantastic dance performance and were given 80 “ringgits” to shop at the mock markets.
The conference itself hosted several notable speakers including this year’s MC Nigel Collin, the eccentric Eric de Groot and “serial entrepreneur” Matthew Michalewicz. This year’s conference also included “Deep Dives” which gave delegates a taste of what each breakout session included. The “Deep Dives” were so successful some delegates wanted to be in two places at once.
The conference wrapped up with the MEA 2013 Industry Awards and Gala Dinner. The awards night recognised the work of exceptional businesses and individuals within the events industry. The dinner itself was a magnificent feast of Malaysian, Chinese and Indian cuisine and the dessert was selection of sweets within an ice dome. The food was so incredible guests were invited to tweet photos of their meals.
This year’s conference included several important announcements for MEA including the launch of Online Special Interest Groups and the news that MEA will announce conferences two years in advance. Whilst next year’s destination is still a surprise it will have to work hard outshine MEA2014.
