As the opening ceremony of the 2014 MEA conference at KLCC finished the heavens opened and the rain bucketed down as it does in the tropics.
So we piled onto the busses and with a police escort through the chaos that is KL traffic were soon at the Saloma Theatre Restaurant. By then the rain had cleared and delegates were greeted by our hosts, the Malaysian Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) and the City of Kuala Lumpur.
We were offered refreshing cold drinks on arrival and ushered into the theatre restaurant for a welcome speech by YBhg. Datuk Hj. Mhd. Amin Nordin bin Abd. Aziz, Director General of Kuala Lumpur City Hall
In a slight twist on an Australian welcome function alcoholic drinks were not served until the Director General had left. An introduction to Malaysian protocols.
Once the bar opened the cold beer was very welcome!
Then it was into an open covered area where a mini street market had been setup. On offer was a variety of Malay and Indian food and stalls setup by various members of the MyCEB community offering all manner of goods and trinkets that we could purchase with our MyCEB currency that we received on arrival.
Networking and bargain hunting were then the order of the day.
A performance by the resident dance troupe introduced delegates to the traditional dances of the various regions that make up Malaysia.
An excellent introduction to Kuala Lumpur and the conference.
