One of Melbourne’s most historic hotels – The Victoria Hotel in Little Collins Street – has added contemporary comforts and style to its heritage character and charm, with a major upgrade of all rooms and public areas.
The hotel – which is part of Accor’s ibis Styles brand – recently completed the refurbishment of all its rooms, with new bedding, bathrooms, furnishings and fast wi-fi added as part of the makeover.
The lobby has also been upgraded, along with the mezzanine bar and lounge area.
The Victoria Hotel offers extensive meeting facilities, with the art-deco Swanston Room capable of hosting functions for up to 250 (theatre style) with fully upgraded A/V technology.
While upgrading to a new look and style, the hotel’s heritage character has been retained.
The hotel boasts a rich and colourful history. A former Premier of Victoria, James Munro, established the hotel in 1880, as the Victoria Coffee Palace – a ‘teetotaller’ alternative to the rowdy, bawdy pub accommodation on offer elsewhere in Melbourne during the late 19th century.
‘The Vic’, as it has been known for over a century, remained ‘dry’ until 1967, and the dramatic transition from cold tea to hot liquor was followed by an even more monumental change when budding corporate raider, Christopher Skase, briefly added the venerable institution to his asset portfolio in the 1975.
The hotel was bought by the Schwartz Family Company (SFC) in 1998, which heralded a number of progressive changes and upgrades including the addition of a rooftop swimming pool and fitness centre.
Schwartz Family Company Director, Jerry Schwartz, said that The Vic now offered rich history and character with one of the city’s premier locations and a new level of quality.
“The Victoria Hotel has always been one of Melbourne’s most popular hotels, particularly for visitors from country Victoria and NSW,” said Mr Schwartz.
“We have retained that good old fashioned country charm, but the facilities have moved with the times, particularly with the installation of high-quality wi-fi throughout the buildings. We offer a variety of room styles that are ideal for families, couples and friends who want good value accommodation in the heart of the city.
“The hotel’s prime position makes it ideal for visitors coming to Melbourne for business, shopping or a sporting event, and we are also in the midst of Melbourne’s famous laneways culture with outstanding bars, restaurants and cafes just a few minutes’ walk away.”
