The theme for Canberra’s big birthday on 11th March 2013 was words. And words appeared in many forms on and around Lake Burley Griffin.
The event encompassed the foreshore of the lake and extended into the parliamentary triangle. People were encouraged to explore the five kilometre route around the Central Basin to enjoy musical and visual entertainment with highlights on four main stages and many pop up stages.
Event Director, Geoff Cobham worked closely with Centenary of Canberra Creative Director, Robyn Archer in constructing this celebratory day.
Much of the music was put together by composer/musician Graeme Leak and performed by local musicians and volunteers.
The finale featured the Canberra Symphony Orchestra playing the world premiere of Symphony No 3 – Century (2013, Opus 91) by Andrew Schultz. The Symphony was followed by fireworks and watercraft celebrating the building of our city and the nation.
Geoff Cobham very generously sat down with ASE to discuss the process behind conceptualising and then delivering this event – we hope you enjoy watching.
