I’m told that Bungalow 8 on a Friday night is crowded, busy and noisy. That feel was recreated for the SES/ABEE Party After Dark this year as 850 guests descended on the venue.
Setting it apart from a regular Friday night though was the mix of people – a lot more baby boomers mixing it up with the Gen Y crowd. There were models – females in red and bare chested blokes (you probably get that on a Friday night as well) and there was live entertainment (think you usually get a DJ at a bar like this).
I completely missed the performance by Jersey to Motown– I must have been at the other end of the bar and didn’t even know it was on, but I did enjoy a couple of numbers by Groove Academy – the rest of the time was spent chatting and try to stay warm. Must say I just don’t get leaving a venue open to the elements and then burning many mega-joules of gas to create hot spots.
The waitstaff had quite a job to distribute the excellent food by Belinda Franks Catering through the crowd and there was a crush at the bar to sample the boutique beer by Brewtopia (specially labelled for the event). Wine drinkers devoured the white and had to switch to red – and back to white again when the red ran out – should have stuck to beer.
The invited guests included trade media, exhibitors from SES and ABEE, hosted buyers from ABEE and VIP corporate buyers.
So all in all a good party with networking opportunities limited to the exhibitors along with excellent food and drink when you could get near it. The largest contingent by far was the exhibitors – so in the end it was just a big party for them – and if that is that the point then it worked. However I think the party should be produced to showcase what our industry can do to turn a party into an event. We are the event industry after all.
