The AIME 2016 welcome function promised “One Year in Melbourne in One Night”. Is that what was delivered?
The venue is an old warehouse that has been converted into a function space by a “happy clappy” church. It is vast, with concrete floors and exposed brick walls. The venue has minimal décor except for a coffee lounge in the entrance area.
For this event bars were set up in various spaces along with food stations. The floor show took place on a stage in the main room.
With the exception of one brilliantly lit room the venue was quite dark – nightclub style. And nightclub style the music was very loud.
I discussed the thinking behind the event design with the producer Peter Jack. I was particularly keen to understand why he presented the event in the way he did. His answers to my questions were frank and some of his thinking certainly surprised me.
This interview runs 15 mins and I would love to hear what you thought of his approach – I invite your comments – below the story or on Facebook.
If you attended the event do you agree with Peter that it is old hat for it to be a networking event and that 80-90% of attendees just wanted to party?
