The Greater Port Macquarie Visitor Information Centre (VIC) managed by leading regional arts, conference and entertainment centre, Glasshouse, was last night crowned winner of the Rod Murdoch Memorial Award for Visitor Information Services at the 2011 New South Wales Tourism Awards.
The award was presented to the organisation last night at a gala ceremony held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The achievement highlights the successful amalgamation of a VIC within a multi-purpose venue and the fully comprehensive range of information and booking services it offers visitors, particularly conference delegates.
Glasshouse Manager Joe Conneely said the organisation was honoured to receive the award.
“The fully-integrated VIC service offered by Glasshouse is a vital part of our offering and it is a privilege to be recognised for our efforts which help visitors make the most out of their stay in the region,” Mr Conneely said.
“The VIC has gone from strength to strength since its amalgamation with Glasshouse and is a shining example of a successful and sustainable VIC business model which has seen the VIC compete effectively against the trend towards online booking services and mobile devices.
“Being centrally located in the CBD and in the same building as our meetings and conference facilities, we can provide delegates a fully-integrated booking service at their fingertips, adding more value to conference organisers and their attendees.
“Our staff are able to offer conference delegates and tourists advice on what to see and do in the area and offer a convenient booking service for accommodation, tour, attractions, as well as shows, programs and performances held at Glasshouse.
“Glasshouse continues to go from strength to strength and welcomed 201,494 people to the Glasshouse Box Office and VIC in 2010/11, an increase of 88% on the previous year.
“This award, together with recent visitor growth at our venue is testament to our valuable staff for their excellent service.
“We look forward to competing against some of the country’s best in this category at the Australian Tourism Awards in 2012.”
This is the fourth significant award presented to the Glasshouse in 2011. Also won this year:
- Winner: 2011 Exhibitions & Public Engagement (4 or less staff) IMAGinE Award, Museums & Galleries NSW
- Winner: 2011 CountryLink North Coast Tourism Award: Best Cultural and Heritage tourism attraction
- 2011 APACA Drovers Presenter of the Year — Honourable Mention Award
Glasshouse was also nominated for the Cultural and Heritage Award for its contribution to the greater understanding of the local history, heritage and contemporary culture in New South Wales.
