NSW Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner today launched the 2011 Crave Sydney International Food Festival, announcing the expansion of regional NSW events on the festival program.
Launched by Mr Stoner at the Hilton Sydney hotel alongside Festival Director Joanna Savill, Peter Gilmore, Neil Perry and other leading chefs, Crave Sydney International Food Festival is a month long celebration of extraordinary food experiences in Sydney and NSW enhanced by regional NSW produce and wine.
“The 2011 Crave Sydney International Food Festival will include the World Chef Showcase, the popular Night Noodle Markets in Hyde Park, Let’s do Lunch, BBQ Madness and many more events,” Mr Stoner said.
“Our farmers, specialist growers and winemakers produce some of the best food in Australia and world class culinary ingredients.
“Last year around 900,000 people experienced 600 Crave Sydney International Food Festival events.
“I’m very pleased to announce the expansion of regional NSW events in the Crave Sydney International Food Festival program.
“There will be more regional festivals, regional food tours and activities at farmers’ markets across the State throughout the month of October.
“For the first time, an international chef here for the World Chef Showcase will cook in regional NSW with one of our top regional restaurateurs.
“Food and Wine Magazine’s Best Young Chef of 2011 from Los Angeles, Ricardo Zarate, will be doing a series of dinner events with David Campbell of The Hungry Duck in Berry.
“The hugely popular 100 Mile Meal concept, which sources NSW produce using a geographic circle of 160km, will promote regional NSW food, wine and tourism.”
In 2011, the 100 Mile Meal concept will be expanded and culminate in a long table open air lunch for 500 in the heart of Sydney. Five regions will be selected to participate in the Sydney finale and compete for the 100 Mile Meal champion. Each region will be teamed with a local winemaker and one of the top chefs, who will act as a mentor and travel to the region to present a 100 Mile Meal.
The Crave Sydney International Food Festival is one of five signature events on the NSW Events Calendar.
Crave Sydney International Food Festival Director Joanna Savill said the festival further enhances Sydney’s reputation as a world class dining and food destination.
“We have innovative chefs, a culinary style evolved from our multicultural heritage, premium local produce and unique backdrops, making Sydney an increasingly respected global dining destination and home to three of the world’s best 100 restaurants,” Ms Savill said.
“The festival is a great opportunity to showcase NSW food and wine on a global stage with some of the best chefs in the world coming to Sydney to discover, taste and cook with our fabulous local produce.”
