Business event leaders from around the nation enjoyed a world-class evening of celebration at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre last night, as the venue marked its 25th anniversary.
Reflecting the venue’s reputation for delivering spectacular events, the Centre’s team staged an evening filled with surprises.
More than 400 guests enjoyed entertainment from popular singers Timomatic and Samantha Jade as they dined on a superb meal featuring confit of ocean trout, marron tail and slow-roasted wagyu beef tenderloin.
Earlier in the evening, after cocktails amid a stunning photographic display of highlights from the past 25 years, ABC radio presenter Adam Spencer led a special panel discussion with industry leaders who reflected on the Centre’s contribution to the events industry.
Welcoming guests, Centre Chief Executive Ton van Amerongen said the event was designed to mark 25 years of achievement for the industry, since the Centre opened its doors in 1988 creating a platform for Australia to compete on the world stage.
“You have all played a significant role in making business events successful for Australia – in making a cottage industry evolve to maturity and in making it a globally recognised success story,” Mr van Amerongen told his guests.
Mr van Amerongen also paid tribute to his staff as well as the three organisations behind the success of the Centre: joint operators Accor and Compass, the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority and Business Events Sydney.
The black-tie event was attended by representatives from convention centres and meeting bureaux from around the country, as well as tourism industry leaders, exhibition and conference organisers, suppliers and Centre clients.
