Sydney Olympic Park recently hosted one of its largest ever conventions, when more than 18,000 Rotarians from across the globe participated in the 105th Rotary International Convention.
Delegates from 154 countries enjoyed Sydney Olympic Park during the first week of June 2014, welcomed by a magnificently lit Olympic Cauldron.
Delegates made use of world-class facilities, including Allphones Arena for opening and closing ceremonies, Sydney Showground for the House of Friendship Exhibition and Cathy Freeman Park for a large Australian BBQ event.
The NSW Government provided support to the international delegates including the provision of free public transport around greater Sydney.
Nearly 15 years after hosting the 2000 Olympic Games, Sydney Olympic Park continues to play an important role in the state economy, hosting 6,000 events each year.
It is estimated that the recent Rotary International Convention brought $60 million in economic benefit to NSW, with international delegates also exploring tourist attractions around Sydney, the Blue Mountains and Hunter Valley region during their visit.
The 105th Rotary International Convention was scheduled to be held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre but due to the Darling Harbour redevelopment project the fate of hosting the convention in Sydney became uncertain. Sydney Olympic Park Authority worked closely with Business Events Sydney, Destination NSW, Tourism Australia and the Sydney Rotary Host Organising Committee to successfully bid for the event to be held at Sydney Olympic Park.
“The success of the 105th Rotary International Convention highlights the amazing versatility and offering of Sydney as a major events city,” said NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Major Events, Andrew Stoner.
“While the new, world-class exhibition and convention facilities at Darling Harbour are under construction, Sydney Olympic Park continues to ensure New South Wales attracts and delivers outstandingly successful events for our national and international visitors, generating significant economic benefits for our State,” added Mr Stoner.
Organisers and delegates of the event spoke highly of Sydney Olympic Park, praising the facilities for their convenience and suitability.
“This was the best Rotary convention ever. The Showgrounds proved to be an excellent venue and we would not hesitate for one moment to recommend it to any prospective users. The work of the Sydney Olympic Park Authority’s Operations and Business Events teams helped greatly in raising the bar for future Rotary conventions around the world,” said Barry Thompson, Chair Host Organising Committee, Sydney 2014 Rotary International Convention.
