Spectacular harbour views, pop-up cafes and restaurants, a location the envy of the rest of the world – work is underway on Australia’s newest exhibition space, Sydney Exhibition Centre @ Glebe Island, opening for the 2014 season in February.
The purpose-built, hard-walled facility offering up to 25,000 square metres of high-quality, fully-enclosed halls will house exhibitions in Sydney throughout the three- year development of the new International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney) and ICC Exhibition at Darling Harbour.
The exhibition and events industry was today briefed on the exciting developments, with the facility’s General Manager, Malu Barrios telling the 200-strong audience that from a slab of concrete they could expect something impressive.
“Sydney Exhibition Centre @ Glebe Island is like a blank canvas; it is an innovative space in the world’s best harbour. Within a few months, Glebe Island will be transformed into a wonderful facility that will come to life with a full calendar of events and exhibitions,” she said.
Managed by AEG Ogden, Asia-Pacific’s largest facility management company, the Sydney Exhibition Centre @ Glebe Island is already attracting strong support from event organisers, who have been consulting with the NSW Government throughout the planning and design process.
Construction of the new fully air-conditioned facility has commenced with work on the foundation slab and other early site works. The facility will be completed in January for readiness testing, with the first show opening in February.
Positioned on the foreshore near the Anzac Bridge, Sydney Exhibition Centre @ Glebe Island will be serviced by a regular, scheduled special event ferry from Darling Harbour and shuttle buses from Central Station.
The free special event transport will be made available on exhibition show days, with a carefully designed and event-specific transport plan in place to accommodate expected visitor traffic.
Pop-up, contemporary catering options in a comfortable, weather-proof environment will also be available for visitors and exhibitors.
Preferred Darling Harbour hotels and dining and entertainment options will remain in easy reach of Glebe Island, where visitors and exhibitors from around the world will be able to enjoy magnificent views of Sydney Harbour Bridge and the harbour.
BESydney CEO Lyn Lewis-Smith outlined her team’s consumer marketing and communications strategy, introducing the audience to the new brand identity and recently-launched Sydney Exhibition Centre @ Glebe Island website.
“BESydney has been working closely with the industry for many months on the new facility’s branding and marketing and we will manage the consumer awareness campaign until the operators, AEG Ogden, take over at the end of 2013,” she said.
Infrastructure NSW’s Project Director, David Riches, also advised attendees that the NSW Government has been working hand in glove with the EEAA and other industry representatives since May to make sure the interim facility is fit for purpose.
“I’d like to thank these industry stakeholders for their valuable input as we’ve worked towards a common goal of getting the facility up and running.
“Together we’ve discussed technical and design details to ensure that Sydney Exhibition Centre @ Glebe Island has all the services needed for successful events.”
After the industry briefing, a ferry transported attendees to Glebe Island to view the new site from the water.
