The Australian Event Awards are pleased to announce finalists for 2015, with 77 national finalists selected across 20 categories.
“The diversity of events and achievements amongst the finalists really exemplifies the strength of the nation’s events industry and justifies its international reputation. A number of the finalists in the achievement categories, for example, have been nominated for their work on international events and campaigns like the first European Games,” said co-chair of the Awards’ Independent Industry Judging Panel and CEO of Opera Australia, Craig Hassall.
Amongst the finalists, the country’s best business, community and regional events and industry achievements sit alongside some of the nation’s major festivals.
In the 10 Best Event Categories, finalists include an impressive array of events from across Australia.
This year, Vivid Sydney (Destination NSW), the Australian Open (Tennis Australia) in Victoria, Adelaide Writers’ Week, Byron Bay Bluesfest in New South Wales, and the Perth International Arts Festival have all gained finalist spots.
The City of Unley’s Double Shot Coffee Fiesta in South Australia, Glow Winter Arts Festival from the City of Stonnington in Victoria and regional events including the Argyle Diamonds Ord Valley Muster (Ord Valley Events) in the far north of Western Australia, the Jodi Lee Foundation’s SA Hiking Challenge and Buskers by the Creek, a Queensland music festival, have also been selected as finalists in the Awards.
At the business and corporate end of things, finalists include Mumbrella360 and the Mumbrella Awards by Focal Attractions in New South Wales, Grow by ANZ: The Keith Urban Experience & Jam Slam (Belle Laide Events) which took place in Victoria and New South Wales, and the generationYOU conference in Queensland.
In the Achievement Categories, finalists include Yakusan for their work on The Hendrick’s Gin “Parlour of Curiosities” at Spectrum Now Festival & Dark MOFO Festival 2015, Technick and The P.A. People, both for their contributions to the 2015 European Games, OzParty Events for their work on The Ultimate Race – Sydney, event staffing provider Event Workforce, venue discovery service The Venue Concierge, the College of Event Management, William Angliss Institute, Luna Park Sydney, Curzon Hall, Brand Events Australia and George P. Johnson Australia.
In the individual award categories, finalists were nominated by a broad group of organisations including Life Saving Australia, Event Planet, Westpac Group and Macquarie University.
The finalists announcement comes after the first round of judging completed by a selection of judges from the Awards’ Independent Industry Judging Panel.
With entries spanning every state and territory in Australia and proportionally high numbers of finalists from New South Wales and South Australia, the race for the 2015 State and Territory Award, recognising Australia’s best region for events, will be a close one.
Says Sandy Hollway, co-chair of the Event Awards’ Judging Panel and former CEO of the organising committee for the 2000 Olympic Games, “It’s well known that Australia has a first-class events industry of international stature. But what is also striking is the diversity of the industry, and this is brilliantly reflected in the finalists for the Awards. They come from across the country and reflect so much that is great about Australia – our sporting and outdoor culture, our festivals in stunning regional locations, winter events highlighting Australia’s temperate climate, the galas and balls which raise funds, awareness and morale for many of Australia’s iconic brands and causes and the knowledge based events which speak to a future shaped by ideas and innovation.”
The 18 State Winners released alongside the finalists further emphasise the breadth and depth of Australia’s events industry.
State Winners included Opera in the Reservoir, which transformed a disused historic space in central Brisbane into an operatic venue, Bayer Bazaar, an event celebrating and highlighting multiculturalism in the workplace and the St John Experience, which brings together the widespread volunteers and staff of St John Ambulance in Western Australia to learn, connect and celebrate their work for the cause.
Winners of the Australian Event Awards will be announced at Doltone House, Jones Bay Wharf in Pyrmont, Sydney, on 17 November 2015.
The Australian Event Awards Ceremony will be accompanied by the Australian Event Symposium, exploring the theme Events, Tourism and Destination Branding, which will be held on 17 and 18 November at the Novotel Sydney on Darling Harbour.
