Leading industry figure and long time event producer, Peter Jones has been named a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2018 Australia Day Honours for “significant service to the tourism and hospitality sectors, particularly through event management, as an advisor, and to the community”.
As Founder and Managing Director of Peter Jones Special Events, which has produced more than 1,200 events across more than two decades, Peter is actively involved in industry leadership and advocacy as a current Board Member of the Victorian Tourism Industry Council, and previously as the Founding Chairman of the Victorian Events Industry Council, a Board Member of Destination Melbourne, a Member of the Business Events Advisory Panel for Tourism Australia and as former President of the Melbourne Chapter of the International Special Events Society.
“It is a great honour to receive this award, as it came as a complete surprise,” said Peter.
“I’ve always been one of those people who has been happy to contribute where I can, as I’ve always said – don’t criticize others if you’re not willing to step in and do something about it. Being involved with such organisations as Victoria Tourism and Events Industry Council, Destination Melbourne, Tourism Australia and Fight MND have all been wonderful experiences and I certainly will continue to assist in the future where I can. My friend and colleague, the late David Grant, also received a similar award so to do the same makes me feel extremely proud.”
Robyn Johnson from Meetings & Events Australia offered her congratulations on behalf of the association, of which Peter is a long standing member.
“Peter has been a very valuable contributor in the development and shaping of this industry. Over many years he’s offered his time and knowledge, presenting many of MEA’s educational and professional development programs. Peter has served on numerous committees and special interest groups that have been instrumental in raising the standards of the events industry, not only in Australia, but internationally,” she said.
Within the industry, Peter has been recognised both in Australia and overseas, winning the International Special Events Society Michael Milburn Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010, the Outstanding Contribution Award by Meetings & Events Australia in 2012 and receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Australian Event Awards in 2016.
