Meetings & Events Australia, the peak member group representing the events industry, is delighted with the announcement today by the Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, the Honourable Steven Ciobo MP, that the federal government will invest $12 million over three years to attract global business events to Australia.
Robyn Johnson, CEO of Meetings & Events Australia commented, “This represents a huge boost to the Australian events industry and confirms that the government understands the important role our industry plays in the national economy. The government’s financial support will allow Australia to more actively compete internationally in what is a very competitive market to attract conferences and events”.
“As this funding roles out the Tourism Australia Business Events team will be in an excellent position to campaign strongly to attract business events, which are a significant part of the mix of events that contribute $30.2 billion annually to the Australian economy. Australia is widely recognised as a desirable destination for conference delegates. However, without a continuous marketing campaign overseas we could easily be forgotten”
“This investment by the federal government is a significant step forward for the events industry. MEA and its members look forward to benefiting from what we see as a much needed strategy to increase opportunities to grow the sector”.
This announcement comes at a time when MEA is working closely with its members to ensure Australia is at the forefront when it comes to delivering world class events. MEA has recently launched a new events diploma designed to ensure the industry has the skilled workforce required as we ramp up our efforts to secure more overseas events.
MEA is engaging with regional Australia to ensure that there are qualified event professionals to support the delivery of regional events and to promote the business events sector into the regions.
Robyn Johnson concluded, “It would be great to see more international delegates staying longer and touring regional Australia”.
This is a great initiative and a positive direction for the business events industry.
