The world’s most liveable city is back in the spotlight after taking out two Australasian titles at the 21st Annual World Travel Awards ceremony in Delhi, India at the weekend.
Melbourne was awarded Australasia’s Leading Meetings and Conference Destination for the second year and Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) announced Australasia’s Leading Meetings and Conference Centre for the third consecutive year.
Victorian Minister for Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher said Melbourne and MCEC were deserving recipients of the greatest honour in the travel and tourism industry.
“This global acclaim pays tribute to the outstanding team work and commitment of all those involved in supporting the Victorian State Government’s investment in business events.
“These awards are a reflection of our city’s exceptional business events offering, including state-of-the-art facilities, intellectual capital and innovation and will strengthen our future ability to secure world-leading conferences to Melbourne,” Minister Asher said.
Melbourne Convention Bureau’s (MCB) Chief Executive Officer, Karen Bolinger said: “It is an honour to be recognised by the World Travel Awards as it represents the voice of the international travel and tourism industry.
“This award is testament to MCB’s recent success in securing some of the world’s largest and most prestigious health-related conferences including the 22nd World Diabetes Congress, the World Congress of Cardiology and the 20th International AIDS Conference.
“MCB works hard to attract business for Melbourne and being named Australasia’s Leading Meetings and Conference Destination is in recognition of all the staff at the Bureau and our members, partners and stakeholders who collaborate in making Melbourne the number one destination for business events.”
MCEC Chief Executive Officer, Peter King said: “We recently celebrated our most successful year on record and in the last 12 months we have delivered six of the world’s biggest and most prestigious conferences which is a credit to our skilled team.
“MCEC is one of only a handful of venues in the world capable of delivering conferences of this calibre and scale and we are incredibly proud of these achievements which have been recognised with this esteemed award.
“Our venue is a major player in the global business events industry and we are proud to lead the way in our creative food, leading technology and excellent service.
“MCEC is part of a ‘Team Melbourne’ approach delivering events for the city, working closely with the Melbourne Convention Bureau, Victorian State Government and other industry partners.”
Melbourne and MCEC will now represent Australasia in a final round of voting to decide who will triumph in the World Travel Award’s world awards on 29 November 2014 in Morocco.
