One of the biggest drawcards at this year’s Sydney Festival was the artist known as Maser’s art installation Higher Ground at Hyde Park. This photogenic, multilevel, three-dimensional M.C. Escher inspired playground came to life with the help of industry event specialists, Staging Rentals & Construction Services.
Standing over two storeys tall (20 feet), Higher Ground relies on the viewer to bring it to life by experiencing the explosive colours, shapes and stripes – offering a delectable space to explore. Designed as an architectural sanctuary, a place to explore and get lost in, the artist’s ultimate goal was to create a unique space for social interaction.
Built by Staging Rentals, utilising a skeleton of shipping containers covered in hypnotic patterns and bold colours, covering approximately 400 m² the installation offered audiences an engaging, ‘not easily forgotten’ experience.
David Comer, Managing Director at Staging Rentals & Construction Services, explained that bringing Maser’s designs to life was a real highlight to kick-start 2015.
“It was a real treat for the team to work on an artist’s work of this size and calibre.
“The team really enjoyed the challenge of building the different shaped spaces and the colours made for an interesting project.
“It’s been great to see the attention Maser’s Higher Ground has received here and internationally. It has been a highlight for Sydney Festival, which continues to raise the bar each year on the experiences it provides for its audiences,” said Mr Comer.
Maser’s Higher Ground used a combination of 110 components of Staging Rentals’ flagship staging product AllySTAGE, together with six custom covered shipping containers. The installation was built in Staging Rentals’ Alexandria warehouse and installed onsite at Hyde Park over a three-day bump-in.
