Of the grand order of folio leviathans, the Sperm Whale and the Right Whale are by far the most noteworthy. They are the only whales regularly hunted by man. To the Nantucketer, they present the two extremes of all the known varieties of the whale. As the external difference between them is mainly observable in their heads; and as a head of each is this moment hanging from the Pequod's side.

Back when the event industry was evolving in Australia a bunch of people got together to form the Australian chapter of the International Special Events Society (now known as the International Live Events Association). The Australian chapters (there were spin offs in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane) lasted around two decades until for various reasons they were dissolved. This publication was born out of the newsletter I produced for the …

I’ve attended nearly every MEA conference for over 25 years – that’s a lot of destinations, a lot of presentations, a lot of awards and a lot of networking. Traditionally the #1 reason for attending is the networking – catch up with old acquaintances and to meet new ones. Since Hobart in 2007 the #2 reason has been to collect the T shirt from the #2 AV company in …

Toby Travanner was not only an excellent MC; he was also tech head, a wine buff and a thoroughly nice human being. Toby was one of the favourite MCs for the annual MEA Awards. Coming from within the industry he was well versed in the categories and the people. A …

Over the years I have attended hundreds of awards presentations and heard the stories of many recipients – some are inspiring, others emotional or just enjoyable. So, why would you enter and what awards are out there that you can enter? First up there are event industry awards such as the Australian Event Awards, and those run by the associations such as MEA and EEA. Then there are other …

Can we just ignore the government and the nightly TV headlines and agree that events are back? Industry events are locked in – Get Local in Sydney in February and then in Melbourne, AIME (March) and MEA Evolve (June). Corporates seem to be more cautious, but if our industry (and venues) can show the way and pull off safe, successful events then our clients will follow suit. RATs enabling …

Question everything
My favourite marketer has another great post this week and I think this line should be writ large on the wall of every event manager… “How do you get these ideas? Question everything.” To my mind every event is either marketing or tourism, or both. So if you want your event to be a success you need great ideas, and great ideas are found when you – question everything. …
